What is ColEm?
While developing fMSX, I got a request to take a look at
the ColecoVision videogame console. The request contained
a short document on the ColecoVision internals, from
which I found that ColecoVision was not much different from MSX.
Thus, I got to work and in a short while made
a ColecoVision emulator, later known as ColEm.
From the very beginning, ColEm has been an open rather than
commercial project, so its sources are freely available for those
who would like to learn from them. Thus, you can use ColEm
sources for free, as long as your project is not commercial and
you are making a clear reference to me, Marat Fayzullin, as the
author. Please note that while ColEm source code is open, it is
not available under GPL license terms.
The Latest Version of ColEm is 2.4
Starting with version 2.4, I have ported ColEm to the UIQ3-based
smartphones from Sony Ericsson and Motorola. Unfortunately,
I only have one UIQ phone, the MotoRIZR Z8 generously lent by Motorola.
So, I would like to ask people with UIQ3 phones to test the ColEm-UIQ oe
their devices and report any found problems by email or via the
EMUL8 discussion group.
Other changes include a better "soft video" and scanline simulation mode,
and multiple stability fixes in ColEm-Symbian (S60 version). Please
see the documentation for the full list of changes and additions.
ColEm supports both standard and SuperAction controllers, including
the spinners (controlled with mouse movement). I have also started
adding Coleco Adam emulation but it is not finished yet.
S60: All 3rd Edition S60 phones, such as N-series and E-series devices,
3250, 5500, 6290, etc., should work. Nokia E62 works, but has faulty
firmware that prematurely turns the backlight off. This problem seems
to affect all applications using direct screen access. Unfortunately,
even the "Backlight Always On" feature, found in my applications,
fails to work around this problem.
